Assetto Corsa Rally — Update 0.4.1: fairer leaderboards and anti-cheating measures take centre stage
The Assetto Corsa Rally development team has released update 0.4.1, a focused but highly significant patch for the game's competitive integrity. The stated goal is clear and direct: make the leaderboards as fair as possible and deter any attempt to exploit track limits or vehicle damage to achieve unrealistic times.
Physical damage always on in Time Attack and Challenge
The most significant change introduced with this update concerns the vehicle physical damage system. From now on, physical damage will always be active in Time Attack and Challenge modes, with no option to disable it. This is a deliberate and firm decision by the developers to counter unsportsmanlike behaviour: driving without any concern for the consequences of impacts, contacts with barriers, or off-road excursions will no longer provide a competitive advantage. Anyone wishing to compete on the leaderboards will have to do so with the same level of risk and care that rally driving demands in the real world.
Tighter track limits: corner cutting is no longer an option
The second change addresses track limit definitions, which have been reviewed and tightened at several critical points across the stages. Corner cutting — a practice often exploited to gain precious tenths of a second outside legitimate racing lines — is now more effectively discouraged. This is careful and detailed work that requires a thorough understanding of real-world trajectories and the spots where tolerance margins could previously be exploited improperly.
Leaderboard reset: starting fresh
As a direct consequence of these changes, times previously recorded on the leaderboards can no longer be considered valid for the purposes of fair competition. For this reason, the developers have decided to fully reset all leaderboards. The reset has been scheduled for today at 4:00 PM BST / 5:00 PM CEST. Once the process is complete, the team recommends restarting the game to ensure all updates are applied correctly.
This is an inevitable but necessary decision: keeping times on the leaderboard that were achieved under mechanics that could be exploited would have compromised the integrity of the entire competition. Resetting and starting fresh is the right call to guarantee all players a fair and equal starting point.
Conclusion
Assetto Corsa Rally update 0.4.1 is a surgical intervention — brief in scope but fundamental to the competitive health of the title. It demonstrates the developers' commitment to fair play and respect for all drivers competing in good faith. With the leaderboards reset and the new rules in effect, a new phase of competition begins: one that is truly fair.
