F1® 25: Sprint to the Finish in Season Two
F1® 25: Sprint to the Finish in Season Two
Formula 1 gears up for an electrifying 2025 with six Sprint events promising to intensify the on-track action even further
The 2025 Formula 1 season marks a historic milestone: the 75th anniversary of the FIA Formula One World Championship, accompanied by the fifth edition of the Sprint format that continues to revolutionize the race weekend. With six circuits selected to host these high-intensity events, Formula 1 confirms its commitment to delivering fans more action and spectacle.
The Six Sprint Circuits of 2025
The 2025 Sprint lineup presents a balanced combination of tradition and innovation. Shanghai and Miami return for their second consecutive year hosting the Sprint format, demonstrating the success of the previous edition. Austin and Qatar confirm their presence for the third time, consolidating their position as ideal venues for this dynamic format.
A welcome surprise comes from Belgium, which returns to the Sprint calendar for the first time since 2023, bringing the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit into the high-speed action mix. Finally, São Paulo maintains its perfect record, hosting a Sprint every year since the format's inception in 2021.
The Sprint Format: Concentrated Action
The Sprint format represents the natural evolution of modern Formula 1. With a distance of 100km - about one-third of a traditional Grand Prix - and lasting approximately 30 minutes, the Sprint is designed to be dynamic rather than strategic. There are no mandatory pit stops, making every overtake even more precious.
The points system rewards the top eight finishers, with 8 points for the winner scaling down to 1 point for eighth place. This format has already proven capable of being championship-decisive: Max Verstappen in 2023 became the first driver to clinch a world title during a Sprint, in Qatar.
Evolution of the Sprint Weekend
The Sprint weekend format has undergone several evolutions since its introduction. In 2025, the consolidated structure includes:
- Friday: A single free practice session followed by Sprint Qualifying
- Saturday: The Sprint in the morning, followed by traditional Qualifying for the Grand Prix grid
- Sunday: The traditional Grand Prix
This structure guarantees meaningful action every day of the weekend, eliminating practice sessions considered less spectacular and replacing them with competitive events where points or grid positions are at stake.
Record-Breaking Numbers
The success of the Sprint format is clearly reflected in viewing figures. The Miami Sprint attracted 946,000 viewers on ESPN, setting a new record for US audiences. In Austria, Sprint Qualifying viewership grew by 76% compared to FP2 sessions from the previous two European races.
New Sprint circuits in 2023 contributed significantly to overall audience growth, with Azerbaijan and Belgium among the best-performing weekends, recording increases of 15% and 22% respectively.
Voices from the Paddock
Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1 President and CEO, commented: "The Sprint has been a great success for Formula 1, bringing all our fans more action and racing on the track. We are seeing the proof of this in our audience data, fan attendance on Fridays and from the promoters and partners."
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President, added: "As the FIA Formula One World Championship celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025, the Sprint will also enter its fifth year as part of the competition. Over that time, and through our strong collaboration with Formula 1 and with the input of all the teams, it has been through several different iterations and the regulations and format have evolved to give us the exciting and popular Sprints we have today."
The 2025 Sprint Calendar
The 2025 Sprint events are strategically distributed throughout the season:
- China (March 21-23) - Shanghai hosts the year's first Sprint
- Miami (May 2-4) - Florida glamour meets F1 speed
- Belgium (July 25-27) - Spa-Francorchamps returns to Sprint format
- United States (October 17-19) - Austin confirms its Sprint vocation
- Brazil (November 7-9) - São Paulo and its unbroken Sprint tradition
- Qatar (November 28-30) - The season's final Sprint under Lusail's lights
Championship Impact
With 36 total points available across six Sprint events, these can represent up to 10% of a season's total points. A significant percentage that can influence not only the drivers' championship battle but also the constructors' fight, making every Sprint an event not to be underestimated.
Recent history has shown how drivers from different teams have seized Sprint opportunities: Max Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas, George Russell, Sergio Pérez, and Oscar Piastri are all Sprint winners, testifying to the format's competitiveness and unpredictability.
The Future is Sprint
2025 represents a consolidation year for the Sprint format, which has found its ideal balance between spectacle and tradition. With Formula 1's 75th anniversary as a backdrop, the 2025 Sprints promise to write new pages in this sport's history, offering fans concentrated action and drivers additional opportunities to shine.
Formula 1 looks to the future with the awareness that innovation, when respectful of tradition, can further elevate the spectacle. And the 2025 Sprints are tangible proof of this philosophy in action.
