Why Assetto Corsa is still the most used driving simulator (despite everything)
Launched back in 2014 by Kunos Simulazioni, Assetto Corsa was intended to be a niche product, aimed at a small group of hardcore sim racing enthusiasts. No one would have bet that, over ten years later, this Italian title would still be the most played, loved and used simulator in the world. And yet, here we are. And it’s no coincidence.
In an increasingly crowded landscape of modern simulators, with brand-new graphic engines and official licenses galore, Assetto Corsa endures and dominates. But why?
1. A solid foundation: physics and feeling
At the heart of any serious simulator is the physics – the dynamic behavior of the vehicles. At launch, Assetto Corsa raised the bar compared to the competition. Today there are more technically accurate simulators (like rFactor 2 or iRacing), but Assetto Corsa has a crucial trait: it delivers real sensations. The feedback through the wheel is clean, natural, immersive. It’s not perfect, but it’s consistent. The driver feels when the car loses grip, when torque kicks in, when the wheels lock. And that consistency is worth more than a thousand telemetry graphs.
2. The triumph of modding
Here lies the real strength. Assetto Corsa has become the most flexible simulation platform ever created. Native mod support opened the floodgates of user creativity: thousands of cars, hundreds of tracks, alternative game modes, enhanced UIs. The community did what the official developers couldn’t: evolve the game endlessly.
Must-have mods include:
-
Content Manager: an advanced launcher that completely replaces the original one, with full support for event management, mods, settings, and replays.
-
Custom Shaders Patch: rewrites parts of the graphics engine, enhancing lighting, shadows, reflections, headlight physics, animations, and more.
-
Sol / Pure: weather and environment managers that turn the game into a modern visual experience.
It’s not just about looks: modding has expanded the game’s functionality far beyond what Kunos originally envisioned.
3. Low cost and accessibility
These days, if you want to get into simracing without a €3,000 PC, your options are limited. Assetto Corsa is lightweight, optimized, and scalable. It runs on mid-range machines without sacrificing much quality, doesn’t need a subscription like iRacing, or high-end hardware like rFactor 2. You often find it on sale for €3-5 on Steam, and the Ultimate Edition already includes tons of official content.
Thanks to Content Manager, the interface is also much more intuitive than many modern sims, often bare-bones or competitive-only focused.
4. Open and active multiplayer
One of the most underrated aspects of Assetto Corsa is its multiplayer. While other sims require you to register, schedule events, or pay subscriptions, Assetto Corsa lets you:
-
Join public servers without limits
-
Create events with friends in a few clicks
-
Use custom cars or tracks without restrictions
And most importantly, the online scene is still very active. Drift, cruising, GT races, endurance, track days, rally – there’s something for everyone. You don’t even need a registered account or complex matchmaking. You just jump in, drive, and enjoy.
5. Total creative freedom
Want to drift a tuned Supra on Tokyo Expressway? Simulate the Nürburgring 24h? Drive a Fiat Panda on a kart track at night? You can do all that in Assetto Corsa. No other sim gives you this level of freedom. No licenses blocking content, and if it doesn’t exist, the community builds it.
Plus, with the right mods, you get:
-
Dynamic cameras like Gran Turismo
-
Advanced weather effects (rain, fog, snow)
-
Realistic day-night cycles
-
Improved AI and roleplay servers
Assetto Corsa is more than a simulator – it’s a sandbox for driving.
6. A legacy that won’t die
Finally, there's a factor often overlooked: nostalgia and identity. Assetto Corsa was the first serious sim for many. It introduced millions to simracing. And many of those players are still around, with their favorite mods, hand-made tracks, and cars from RaceDepartment. They don’t leave it because it’s familiar, reliable. And thanks to the community, it’s eternally updated.
Conclusion: a legend that keeps on racing
Assetto Corsa is not the best-looking, the most modern, or the most realistic simulator in strict terms. But it’s the one that works best, offers the most, and lasts longest. It’s one of those rare cases where the original vision and community support combine to create something greater than the original product.
As long as there are enthusiasts willing to model cars, build tracks, and share their passion, Assetto Corsa will remain the benchmark for simracing. No neon lights or 4K trailers needed. Just tarmac, tires, and passion.
